Mobile PC Team opens their doors to the public

The Mobile PC Team in Redmond have sure picked up the pace. While the Tablet MVPs sat there in their office one thing we focused on was opening the doors to the general public. Its no good developing a platform for users if you dont know who your users are. So I guess we can take full credit blame for getting some of these Calendar events placed in your itinerary:

  • WEBCAST: Learn to Use SmartDraw, a Business Graphics Application, Monday, April 2, 10:00 A.M. PTWith SmartDraw you can create professional-quality graphics with a Tablet PC running Windows Vista Premium Edition. Get an in-depth look at how SmartDraw incorporates Tablet technology and mobile PC features into its application.
  • WEBCAST: Learn to Use Phatwares PenCommander, Monday, April 9, 10:00 A.M. PTPenCommander allows you to use a pen to call up commands that can control your computer, such as editing documents, inserting often repeated text into documents, launching applications, and much more. PenCommander supports Windows Vista Tablet technology.
  • WEBCAST: Learn to Use Laplinks PCsynch, Monday, April 16, 10:00 A.M. PTLooking for a way to keep files synchronized between your Ultra-Mobile PC and another PC? Laplink PCsync enables fast, easy, automated file transfer and synchronization between PCs. It was designed to give users of multiple computers—including Windows Vista, XP, and 2000—a secure way to access files and synchronize folders instantly and effortlessly.
  • WEBCAST: Learn to Use ArtRage 2 UMPC, a Natural Painting Application, Monday, April 23, 10:00 A.M. PTAmbient Designs ArtRage 2 UMPC has been specifically designed for Ultra-Mobile PCs. It has a redesigned interface and workflow for small form-factor, portable PCs. You can paint and sketch using your whole screen as a canvas, and take your art with you wherever you go.
  • WEBCAST: Learn to Use iGuidance, a Navigation Application, Monday, April 30, 10:00 A.M. PTiNavs iGuidance navigation software helps you turn your existing Tablet PC or UMPC into a navigation system. The touch-screen operation and map displays are enhanced for use with Ultra-Mobile PCs.

The problem for me is that I am sitting at the bottom of the planet while mostof you are on top. I know most of you are actually somewhere in the Northern Hemisphere so these events will probably fall nicely in between your work day. I for one will get up for early for SmartDraw, PhatWare and iGuidance.

In other news from Redmond Ultra-Mobile PC Team member Vikram Mada has started blogging about the platform he loves so much. Even more excitingly Vikram used to be an editorial cartoonist and will be illustrating his blog with his artwork.

The Chipmaking Future for Tablet PCs

Everywhere I turn lately, there are analysts forecasting an explosion in the sales of tablet PCs. For sure, most of that growth is based off the surge in popularity of the iPad. Much like the iPhone and iPod before it, the iPad represents the first mainstream product in a growing market and it’s not surprising that consumers like it – tablet PCs are great products and soon enough they’ll find out how great as true iPad competitors emerge.

What interests me most in this surge is not the potential for sales in the future. It will be interesting to see if some forecasts, such as a recent Gartner report stating that tablet sales will reach more than 200 million by 2015 while Forrester’s more conservative reports still peg the growing market at roughly 20 million tablets by the same year, will come to fruition.

But, I’m interested in the surge of news coming from chip manufacturers as they shift focus to the mobile trend in tablet computing.

Right now, many devices on the market are running on the A8 Cortex platform. This includes the iPad, which runs the A4 processor, and the Samsung Galaxy Tablet which is running the ARM A8 Cortex. The same chip base is also used in the Nokia 770.

But, despite how versatile the A8 has been in the last two years, manufacturers are aware of the need for faster, more power-efficient chips. It’s why MSI decided to delay its Windpad 100.Instead of rushing a tablet to market with aging technology (in their case an Intel Atom Z530), MSI is waiting for something more efficient and powerful.

The New Chips on the Horizon

While MSI will release at least one version of their Windpad before 2011 with the newer Cortex A9 from Texas Instruments, there are a lot more options in development as well. To start with, Texas Instruments has already licensed a new architecture from ARM – likely to go into new devices in about a year.

Intel is also upping their investment in mobile processing. They have already started appearing in some new devices like the Asus EP121, the Cisco Cius and possibly the HP Slate 500 (still rumors right now). But, we all know that Intel is pushing for more releases in the next two years to ramp up battery life without sacrificing power.

Then there’s AMD – a company that does not yet have a tablet chip on the market. Already, Dirk Meyer has been quoted as saying they won’t invest specifically in tablet computing until “the market’s big enough to justify the investment”. Of course, that doesn’t mean AMD isn’t in the tablet game at all. Their newest Ontario chipset is a combined processor/graphics chip that supposedly draws less power and that they see as being viable in tablets.

AMD is already a little behind in the netbook and mobile field, so this isn’t exactly surprising, but they can’t get away with not discussing it. Investors and analysts alike are tracking tablets because this is a massive growth market.

I still don’t know that numbers like Gartner’s are feasible – 200 million tablets is a lot of devices for a 5 year period. But, I also think we’re looking at the beginning of a massive surge in an industry that’s been on the cusp for 10 years. Chipmakers are going to start shifting resources to where the money is. No, desktop and laptop PCs aren’t going anywhere ( more than 250 million sales a year won’t just disappear), but if we see even a fraction of that in Tablets, the computing industry is going to change a lot in the next 5 years.

Television Guy Hugo talk UMPC

Today I spent the day at CeBIT Australia – and I know you’re all wondering, yes, eo did too! We (eo and I) walked around the Fair, got harassed by Frank Arrigo (thanks for breakfast mate) and the SWMUG Boys. It was evident early on that eo would once again shine today.

Ive been at the CeBIT show as Official Blogger (what a contradiction in terms :-) and as part of the G Innovations Stand. G Innovations is a reseller of Tegatech Australias and therefore UMPC. They specialise in Home Automation and know just about everyone inthe industry. They asked me to assist at their stand, and even made me a badge that reads "Tablet PC Specialist," wow!

Today it was Channel Seven’s Peter Blasina that stopped me and requested a impromptu Origami Performance. How could I say no? For all of you that know me, it’s stopping me talking about Tablet that is the problem, not starting me, poor Peter. Watch here, or here, or here:

I’ve got a brand new T Series Fujitsu Tablet to play with…mmmmmmmm yummy. It will be with me, and eo, in NZ, Melbourne and all over Sydney.

Jon Dee and Hugo Ortega back on Monday

Hi guys! I know many of you are waiting and I have failed to produce. There is a good reason however in that Jon and I had always planned this date (Monday 5th of March) and it was I that had enthusiastically, and mistakenly, promoted it as last Monday to you my readers.

Sorry! It will be worth the wait I promise as Jon will be on a high after being on Australia Television (COOL AID: The National Carbon Test) and after haven won and Oscar - or at least Al Gore did for his work on "An Inconvenient Truth" of which Jon is the Official Spokesman here.

Lean on me V7110 EO

I see that the Family Portrait attracted a fair bit of attention yesterday - too funny as all I was doing was charging them up. Today I began with the best of intentions (all devices charged and staring at me) however it ended up being almost a gadgetless episode. First my i7210 and RaonDigital Vega went to Journalists, the Fuji returned to Fuji, the Samsung Q1 went to Melbourne, so all I was left with was EO v7110 staring at me - and the time was only 8:30 in the morning.

With several key meetings planned for the day there was little time for play. With that in mind I picked eo and introduced him to Mr. Extension (the battery I mean).

I must say that the short period we spent together I really enjoyed the feel and the ergonomics that the battery adds to the eo. Firstly I love the way it sits off the desk and has better airflow (as opposed to laying flat on its back); I also enjoy the benefits the battery added to carrying the device in one hand, or under one’s palms.

Two Tablet greats combine to make one!

Rob Bushway’s blog CutMeLoose.com has been a favorite of mine since I started blogging. His ability to liberate information and express his passion for all things Tablet PC is infamous worldwide. Dennis Rice, also a MVP in Tablet, has informatively entertained the community via Travelin’ with tablet Guy and Tablet PC Buzz.

These Uber Geeks are to the Tablet community what the "New York Times" is to the general populous. The fact that they have come together and announced a joint venture (Commercial Website) called GottaBeMobile is a very exciting event in my books. Visit the site often and subscribe to their feeds; with these guys at the steering wheel I reckon Tablet PC has just been given a set of off-road wheels – enjoy the ride with us.

PS. Rob and Dennis, I’m honored that you placed me in the community list, thanks!

Tablet PC is great in 2008!

If you follow Craig Pringles blog you may have seen an article titled "Now is the time for Tablets." Not only was the article very cleverly written but it did what all good articles should do, it inspired thought! Some of the famed responses were:

  • Warner, with Craig Pringle: Now Is The Time For Tablets
  • Then Layne with The Cosmic Forces of Mobility, which then caused Rob to:
  • The year of the tablet? Wrong question (GottaBeMobile)

While I didnt join in on the debate I did find the topic, and everyones input, rather intriguing. If you look at all the articles it isnt difficult to see that were actually all sharing one very important common thought, i.e. Tablet PC is on the rise and not vice versa.

Today I thought Id wade in on the debate as a friend decided to forward me a hardcopy of an article written in "The Australian," titled: "CIOs struggle to keep staff". While the article itself is of little consequence to the Tablet PC space it was interesting to note one omission from the online version of the article. When I received the attachment I found a small survey, conducted by IDC Australia, titled "Forecast For Management Survey 2006". As part of their finding IDC chose to look at Hot Technologies to 2008 of which the findings therein reminded me of the Pringle Affair... So what did IDC find?

Hot Technologies to 2008/Forecast Growth

  • Voice and voice over IP: 179%
  • Tablet PCs: 87%
  • Sales force automation tools: 84%

As I perused the attachment, and looked back over Craigs article, I must admit that 2008 felt more representative of my conclusions, more so than 2006 does. Since the release of UMPC Ive fielded 10 - 4 0 phone calls per day on Ultra mobile PC (and therefore Tablet) as a productivity tool. Not only have I had to explain the idiosyncrasies of UMPC but more interestingly still Ive had to educate most of these callers primarily on what is Tablet.

Today were living in a world where the number one feature that makes callers’ pickup a telephone and enquire about UMPC is its size/processor ratio. While I too see UMPC as a great tool for software, wanting hardware, "bigger than a PDA and smaller than a laptop." What I find disconcerting about most callers is that too often they overlook the power of digital ink.

What Id like to do today is ask anyone considering UMPC to also consider the power of digital ink; we must always remember that the ability to take handwritten notes, therefore allowing them to be printable, emailable, shareable, erasable and editable, is also the ability to empower free thought. While most companies find it difficult to understand this concept (mostly because theyre focused on UMPCs’ size) I think the easiest way to describe this concept is by looking at the "additional comments" box found on most paper forms. Giving people the ability to ink additional thoughts, or diagrams, gives your software the power of free-speech. Never underestimate the ink!

So why do I think 2008, and not 2006?

I believe that between the time it takes a company to research the implementation of a new product, design/redesign software for it, roll it out, rework the software, re-rollout, rework and rollout again, we will definitely see ourselves stroll past 2007 and therefore well into 2008. Look at the EO and Samsung for example; the eo, with late deliveries on all orders, and the Samsung, still trying to decide where and who to sell to, are both prime examples of time rolling by. Were in late May 2006 and the key players are still the OEMs and the Software Developers. Until the key player in this space becomes the consumer the whole Tablet-thing won’t generate enough attention for anyone to deem it a success. Right now we’re in the hands of the Software Developers as they work on that one killer-app that will take UMPC from a clever idea, to a household/executive necessity.

My only advice would be to start sewing Tablet seeds now, because when 2008 rolls around it will be too late for anyone not already involved. Im cuddling and hugging lots of new Partners so that my 2008 end of year party can raise my champagne glass to Tablet, and not spend the night grumbling about it as another great idea that lost its place in the world.

The day Dr Neil came to my house

Hes a learned man, our Dr. Neil. A man of focus, passion and determined to be of significance. Ironically we met in the elevator of an apartment block my wife and I inhabited. It was 2001 and we were living in the beachside suburb of Dee Why, found on the Northern Peninsula of Sydney. I’d just completed my MCP and was feeling optimistic and invigorated. My first encounter with Dr. Neil wasn’t as memorable for me as I’d now like to recall, but it was eventful. I know that we connected at an umbilical level and shortly formed a sibling like relationship that would later encircle both our partners and my son Leon.

Four years on and Dr. Neil was in the country for yet another short stint. He’d left several messages that I’d ashamedly not replied to. Finally on the third day we connected and were able to talk. “I’ve got to come and see you”, he says, “There’s something you need to see”.

Fidgeting and restless, Dr. Neil hurriedly ate his meal. “I’ve got to show you that thing I told you about”, he proclaims wile masticating his last mouthful. We head to the lounge room and gather around an ottoman, dishes left idle at the dining table.

Falling in love, an event witnessed by many, is an emotion sometimes impetuous, sometimes cruel but always potent. Not knowing that my still rather untamed passion for IT was about to have a very rude awakening, I sat and waited. Dr. Neil ripped open the Velcro clad slip case and slid out the most attractive, most visually satisfying computer hardware I’d ever seen – a Tablet PC, and in this case the iTablet Slate PC.

iTablet Slate PC, now known as the Sahara in Australia

As unaware as I had been about the event about to unfold, I was also now unable to reply to this assault on my senses. “It’s a Tablet PC I found in the U.S”, he states, while simultaneously booting the device and ceremoniously drawing the digitizer pen from the screen itself. I found myself awed by the device and find it extremely difficult to contain my enthusiasm.

Dr. Neil Roodyn studied Software Architectures for Real Time Systems at University College London, for which he received a PhD, and is a Microsoft Tablet PC MVP; he’s an Author of two Tablet PC e-books and a textbook on Extreme Programming for .NET. We spent the rest of the evening going through the intricacies, the pro’s and con’s and a brief history of the device. I know that evening left a huge impact on my life as I’ve since become an owner of three different tablets, sampled tones of them and more recently got involved with distributing the devices in Australia and New Zealand. Had I known that Dr. Neil would have such a grand influence that very evening I probably would have spit polished my shoes, vacuumed, mopped and perhaps showered…oops. I’m forever indebted to that elevator in Dee Why and perhaps blessed in ways yet to become apparent. I know that Tablet PC, in all its majestic printed circuitry, is a device yet to make the splash it intended. When that splash eventually turns into a ripple however, and later a Tsunami, I’ll be surfing the bastard for all it’s worth!

  • Have you met Dr. Neil Roodyn?
  • Do you remember the first time you played with a Tablet PC? (kind of like, where were you when JFK was shot? or Princess Diana was killed?)

Canberra Windows User Group

This last week I spent time in Australia’s Capital City, Canberra (pronounced Kambra if you’re an Aussie). Amongst the sites and sounds that engulf this wonderful place are: our Parliament House (and our politicians), The Royal Australian Mint (where we make our coins) and Questacon – a Geeks Haven. Apart from enduring enjoying the four hour drive from Sydney I also had the chance to catch up with friends and acquaintances too. My main reason for being in Canberra was to conduct a Tablet Talk for the Canberra Windows User Group.

As I arrived in Canberra the one distinguishing feature that really hit me was the cold; as I left Sydney that morning it was a healthy (18 degree Celsius = 64.4 degree Fahrenheit). As I made my way to my meeting I knew my body was experienceing the weather difference, I glanced at my in-car thermostat and realised it was (1 degree Celsius = 33.8 degree Fahrenheit) and dropping rapidly - it got to -7 degrees Celsius that evening. As usual I had my little wheelie luggage bag full of Tablet PCs and now Ultra Mobile PCs too; knowing that the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) is covered in Governmental Agencies I came armed with resources and answers. I spent the evening prior developing a PowerPoint presentation that would take attendees through the past, present and future of UMPC. I will post this later for your own resources.

The CWUG is actually conducted over two 90 minute sessions with a pizza session in the middle. The first session attracted a lot of representatives from the Australian Defense Force and other Governmental Agencies. Judging by the amount of left-over pizza it looks as though the turn out was not as big as intended. The second session was mostly Microsoft Staff members that were keen to get a look, and understanding, of UMPC in Australia. The main topical questions revolved around battery life and Internet connectivity, but I was however pleasantly surprised with the two group’s enthusiasm and interest. The sessions turned out to be a real deep-dive with some more intriguing topics like implementation scenarios and internal hardware specifications getting a lot more focus than usual.

All-in-all my Canberra event was deemed a success by my host, David Mackie, and has sparked a wave of conversation and thought. I look forward to returning to the ACT shortly and continuing the traveling UMPC show. My commitment remains unresolved and my passion remains focused on building an understanding, and faith, in what will shortly become the Form Factor of choice in the enterprise arena…UMPC!

PS. Special thanks to Jeff Alexander, Microsofty, for garnering attention towards the CWUG, and my UMPC convoy!

Samsung Q1 is Official in Australia NZ

I am excited to bring you the news that the Q1 one is Officially here. Tegatech Australia has today announced a partnership with Samsung Australia - Q1 Ultra Mobile PC Officially available! For me personally the lead up to this event has been UMPC making history in Australia, and is the turning of a new age for this region. Earlier this year I was regrettably told that Australia was not earmarked at all for the Q1, so upon hearing the news of its Official Availability I was absolutely rapt for the Aussie lovers of this gear!

Tegatech Australia Official Partner of Samsung Q1

In a partnership seen as strategic as much as anything else Samsung Australia today gave Official Distribution rights to Australias only Tablet PC Distributor, Tegatech. This means that Australia now has an "Aussie Q1" with specifications outlined in the spec sheet provided today.[Q1 in AUstralia]

Not only did the Q1 go live today but so did all the matching accessories - I cant wait to get the car kit and keyboard stuff! Given that the Q1 was the "Original" Origami (touted on all Samsung sites as the Worlds first UMPC) it warms me inside to know that Australia will now have exposure. As you all know Ive owned one for some time and it still is arguably the sexiest off all the UMPC available on the market. Cant wait to see what Australia thinks...

A copy of the Official Press Release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Samsung Australia selects Ultra Mobile PC Partner
Distributor Tegatech Australia gets Official Approval for Samsung Q1

Sydney, September 29th, 2006 – Tegatech Australia, a leader in the Ultra Mobile PC space, has today been given Official approval to distribute the Samsung Q1 to its channel of Authorised Resellers. In a move seen as strategic for Samsung the new partnership is designed to leverage off of Tegatech Australia’s key focus in the region – the Tablet.

“Our commitment to Distributing Tablet PC hardware in Australia and NZ has brought us to this point,” said a Tegatech representative. “We’re excited about the role and are placing as many resources available to ensure its success. The fact that the role has been given to us almost exclusively is a huge plus.”

Meanwhile Samsung is reported to be pleased with the decision as the Q1 Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) still remains a fairly misunderstood product within the industry. Given the penetration that Tegatech Australia has in the Tablet PC market, Samsung is looking to leverage off of that and establish a solid presence for the Q1 device.

Tegatech has held key talks with National Sales Manager for Samsung Australia, Joe Serra, and is pleased with the outcomes. While Tegatech will not have access to much of the Samsung IT range Mr. Serra has asked for a concentrated focus from Tegatech towards the Q1 and the Reseller Channel.

“We understand the product and have a growing channel of Authorised Tablet PC Resellers with proven track records; they are innovative and proactive with their solutions. The Q1 not only provides a pleasant user experience but it can increase productivity too,” Tegatech said. “With our commitment to the Resellers, and the Samsung Q1, we can help ensure that UMPC is in fact a success downunder.”

About Tegatech Australia

Tegatech Australia is the only Tablet PC specific Distributor in the Australia/NZ marketplace. By focusing so heavily on the Tablet PC form factor Tegatech has enhanced the Reseller experience via a commitment to training and support. Close ties to Microsoft creates a synergy that allows resellers to grow and enhance their presence in the Tablet space.

Established in 2003 Tegatech is now seen as a market leader in the Tablet PC arena. By targeting resellers-only Tegatech has grown from strength-to-strength. Via strategic reseller partnerships that focus on vertical markets, and the corporate sectors, Tegatech is creating a groundswell of interest. Current Tablet successes include the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), National Australia Bank (NAB), TAB Corp and more.

David Wallace Kludges with UMPC

Ive been mates with Lifekludgers David Wallace for some time now. Its always interesting to get his perspective on the mobility scene based on his lateral thinking about mobility vs. immobility!
On this occasion he has the EO i7210 UMPC and he has posted some thoughts. In it readers get unique insights into the major benefits, and, fundamental flaws in UMPC for folks with disabilities.

Thanks to a kind spirited supporter, who handed the UMPC to him, David has done a fantastic job of sharing his impressions interpreted via his life as a Quadriplegic. I always love reading his stories and am passionate about being part of his solution. Great job Dave!

Take your Vital Signs at Microsoft

My friend Barbara Duck (of The Medical Quack) would be happy to hear that I found some IT medical gear while in Redmond with Microsoft. As I was in between meetings going from Building 113 to Building 92 I came across one of the Health/Lifestyle room’s setup for MS staff.

Not hugely innovative, or unique to MS, it was still nice to see touch technology in the wild and in use in this environment. Both machines can take your Vital Signs and both designed to feedback your state of health. You can sit on and stick your arm in both machines; the white one primarily designed around diabetes identification and prevention, and the second for blood pressure.

Touch computing focused on Diabetes

Both come with a nice array of disclaimers ensuring people that these provide good guidance, but never designed to replace your GP. You need to visit each device often and take an average of your results to get the highest level of accuracy, so ultimately the results are based on your efforts too.

I like how the white one had built-in sensors on the handgrips and how both offered touchscreen technologies to avoid the use of keyboards and increase the amount of personal (self-serve) health!

Hugo in Europe and still an MVP

Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good Evening folks!
Many of you I know have been sending me comments, emails and pinging me non-stop with regards to my whereabouts. I am pleased to say that I am still on Holiday (in fact I extended my Holiday a little) and am pleasantly cruising through Europe! I have not put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) for the blog for some time so today when I got an email from Microsoft I thought it a prime opportunity.
Here is what I received:

Dear Hugo Ortega,

Congratulations! We are pleased to present you with the 2008 Microsoft® MVP Award! The MVP Award is our way of saying thank you for promoting the spirit of community and enhancing people’s lives and the industry’s success every day. Your extraordinary efforts in Windows - Tablet PC technical communities during the past year are greatly appreciated.

SO how are thing you may ask? Things are just great. I am with my wife and kid and we are travelling see friends and family. We have a “home base” in a little apartment we rented in Eastern Europe and spend our time travelling in and out of the car park using a 1988 Mercedes Benz a good friend was kind enough to loan me. Apart from dealing with the traffic concerns, and the fact that everyone drives on the wrong side of the road, the journey has been effortless.

With regards to Tablet PC and Ultra Mobile PC you will be pleased to know that as always I am travelling loaded. Before I left I bought a Toshiba R400 and knew that that was going to be my fulltime inking device. Ironically as I left the front door I grabbed an OQO 02 and just before Taxi pulled out of the driveway I ducked back in and grabbed a Samsung Q1U-V.

The response to these devices everywhere I have been is amazing. Europe has so little exposure to these it surprises me and almost makes me feel like everything is new again. The first few weeks I spent showing the R400 and its massive array of capabilities. People always flip when they here is packs 4GB of Ram (although it only sees 3.319 GB). As soon as I flip the screen there is an instantaneous gasp of excitement and adults and kids alike become filled with new drawing capabilities. Kids sketch using InkArt, while adults write using OneNote; either way the response to Digital Ink is overwhelmingly positive.

The OQO has been a clear success. It smaller size and neater form-factor makes people question the entire concept of a desktop at all. Given that most the folks I am visiting are buying desktops for the first time then something like an OQO absolutely fries their brain – and that is a good thing! The Samsung Q1U seems to be the one all the University kids want. With its camera capabilities and it ability to relate to all media formats it seems as though the Q1U also has a home here.

I will start to blog again as I have missed you all. I thank you for your readership and promise you as much fun and play as ever.

Whats in my Gadget Bag for China

I’m literally off to China in the morning (+7hrs from this post which is meant to include sleep). I have been invited to partake in some Vista Labs held at Microsoft Office in Beijing and am lucky enough to be part of a delegation made up of 25 MVPs and/or Global Leaders.

The main reason I have not packed anything other than my Gadget Bag is YOU, of course. Here’s a video of what I’m taking. It’s rough but it will detail a portion of what’s coming along, a why.

The cool thing is that this video responds to the call-out by certain bloggers to show us “What’s in your gadget bag.” So if you want to join in just let us know that youve done it and we’ll point traffic your way. Here are some examples I followed:

  • Russle Beattie
  • Craig Pringle
  • GottaBeMobile
  • SumoCat
  • JKonTheRun
  • Chris Anderson
  • Fazal Majid
  • Neil Turner
  • Xeni (Gixmodo)
  • Dave Barry
  • Or…just Google it

My next post will be from either Singapore, where I have a stopover, or from Beijing!

Day one and MVPs are everywhere

My Q1, Q1 8-cell, Acer Ferrari 1000, JVC Everio HDD Camera, phones, papers, pens, mice, watches...whats a geek to do!

Day one in Seattle has been a blast. The MVP Summit has not even commenced and Ive already met more new folks than I probably met all year last year. Sitting in my hotel room I was pinged by nearly everyone on my IM list; one was wishing me luck, another the best, another wanted me to tell Neil to keep podcasting! Of all of them my favorite was a blogger wanting to remain anonymous after sending me this particular link. It seems as though there is a conspiracy theory for everything isn’t there?

Tomorrow I have coffee and cake (maybe breakfast if we wake up in time) with James Kendrick, Rob Bushway, Dennis Rice and more. I will keep you posted if this occurs and will do my best to take some photos. Although some of you may not believe me, it will be our first time together – mine with them that is. It reminds me of the tale James shared recently at CES this year as it was the second time only that he and Kevin Tofel had met. Amazing.

So what did I get up to tonight? Tonight I floated around. First I went to Gameworks – an electronic gaming lounge and fun park – where I sat with all the Mobile Device MVPs. As you might guess there I was greeted by an array of Dopod, Razor, Tazor and Amazor phones (the last two are made-up). The conversations were fun and focused totally and solely on mobility; no surprise there. I even met Mauricio Freitas for the first time where I looked at his IM list o(n his phone) and saw my friend Long Zheng on there…this kid is everywhere.

After Gameworks I took a walk down the road with Nick Randolph, Australia only Mobile Developer MVP, to another Bar down 5th Avenue. This time it was to hang out with Wayne Small of the SBS User Group “International.” Now these guys are true geeks. In the bar we drank Red Beer, ate carrot sticks and Indian Samosa sticks, while chewing over Small Business Server issues. Half way through the night all the Aussies were pulled aside and informed that Wayne was celebrating his Birthday. In true geek style the team had organized a big fat cake to make its way towards the front of the room as all the Aussies started yelling, at full pitch, “Aussie, Aussie Aussie!” “Oi! Oi! Oi!”

The pub was a roar of laughter and excitement as geeks shared tales of Ethernet, Online Protocols and Service Pack mayhem. I love these guys. Tomorrow is registration day and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!

And the Numbers Are In

Just yesterday, IDC released numbers for Q3 sales of tablets around the globe. As expected, those numbers were very good and as expected, a good percentage of them were iPads. Specifically, the numbers show that Apple made up nearly 90% of all tablets sold in the quarter with 4.2 million sales (of 4.8 million total shipments).

Of course, that’s the not the number I’m most interested in. The final numbers for total shipments in 2010 is expected to be roughly 17 million (once Q4 numbers are finalized) and a lot of those will be iPads for sure (though the Galaxy Tab made a nice run at the end of last year). But, it’s the prognostication for 2011 and 2012 that really draws my attention. IDC has pegged the 2011 market to be somewhere in the vicinity of 44 million tablets with 2012 expected to sell more than 70 million.

Of course, no one company could maintain numbers like that alone. Just like with the smartphone market which saw a huge surge in popularity with the iPhone, but ultimately gained most after Android was released, the tablet market looks ready to explode on the precipice of a widespread Android 3.0 rush.

It’s not just Android and manufacturers like Motorola and Asus that are pushing the market, however. Yes, Apple will have a new iPad available soon – probably in April – and it will likely sport at least 80% of the upgrades that Apple’s customer base has been driving for (the usual almost everything upgrade). But, there are also newcomers slated to hit the market soon, including RIM with their Playbook, HP with WebOS, and the newest versions of MeeGo. Windows tablets are still a tossup with third party extension being absolutely necessary at this point to drive any kind of innovation in those devices, but even so, by the time 2012 rolls around, we might be looking at the first Windows 8 tablets.

It’s amazing to see the growth we’ve seen in only the last 9 months. A year ago we were prognosticating that the tablet market might take off any time and Apple’s new device seemed like a tossup – it could be popular…or it could be a flop. And yet, with the iPad wedging open a new market and millions of consumers turning their attention to this burgeoning market, we are getting ready to enter a completely new era in mobile technology and personal devices.

I’m interested to see where it leads us – not just in sales numbers (these companies could sell anything), but in the actual real world uses of those products. How will they impact our lives in the two or three years to come and how will they affect the way business gets done? Those are the questions I am most excited to have answered.

Tablet Academy Award goes to Hugo Ortega

I think we all know, and listen to, the enviable James Kendrick via his worldwide blockbusting podcast: “OnTheRun.” The one thing I didn’t know (and perhaps they didn’t either – LOL) is that they issue awards to tablet PC events conducted worldwide. This week the award went to a little Aussie Blogger named “Hugo Ortega,” for my "Via Virtual UMPC" demonstration.

Here’s what James Kendrick said (OnTheRun with Tablet PCs #17):

“I don’t know what we would call our version of the Academy Awards, maybe the OTR-ee’s, but whatever we’d end up calling our awards I would give Hugo one for absolutely the epidomy of creativity; most creative use of a non-tablet pc to demonstrate a yet to be released tablet PC without using a Pen or Stylus”

I’m honored and enthused; it keeps me fired-up and motivated!

Have a listen to the show - it really is a good one.

Thank you Gang!

[My mate Craig Pringle gets a mention too, for his Vista work!]

iPad TEGA Tablet Surface and Hunter Valley

iPad (pre-launch 2010 Australia) - about to begin second session

On Thursday afternoon I packed up my bags, my iPad, my TEGA Tablet and a Surface Table….yes, a Surface Table! My direction was north, and my goal was to speak at the AIS conference 2010. This is the third occasion I have been invited to present and on this occasion I had to give two sessions, for the first time, so I had twice the opportunity to make blunders, or on a positive note, had twice the opportunity to impress.

"during" my talk I let all the attendees come up
 and play with Surface

Ultimately the audience is a bunch of well-schooled, well intended, IT managers and professionals. Billed as “The primary event for ICT professionals in independent schools” the event is held in the Hunter Valley, i.e. some of Australia’s most heavenly win country. My talks were scheduled for Friday and without delay I packed, prepared and practiced all my lines. With PowerPoint on my new T900 (with multi-touch) and a plethora of cutting edge devices (totalling a street value of almost $30,000 AUD) it was always going to be entertaining at worst! LOL!

"Inspect A Gadet" LOL!!!

My talks came and went, I had countless questions about the TEGA Tablet, the iPad strengths and weaknesses and even had Microsft staff stay through my first talk and come up after and say they thoroughly enjoyed it (especially the Surface bits). Too cool. I just thought I’d share some images as it was fun to be part of. If I get invited back next year (my fourth year) I better start planning ways to beat this year’s presentations….maybe $100K worth of gadgets!

Next week Im speaking at the Webciety Conference, CeBIT Australia 2010. Cant wait!!! Tegatech will have a stand their too.

The thing I like about this photo is the David vs. Goliath battle that went on between our laptops. On one side their is James with a 17" Dell beast (2hrs battery life) and on he other the Samsung 7" Q1B with 9hrs battery life using a 6 Cell battery! I know which one Id rather...LOL

Post soon from Beijing! [thanks for your comments, Ill try and answer later]

taken on Flight SQ221 - Syd to Beijing

and yes, that is a computer James has...not a Cinema!

Ultra Mobile PC at Camera Action Australia

This afternoon I went and bought a copy of ROAM Magazine, an Australian magazine dedicated to the mobility scene. Now I know we’re still searching for an answer, as to whether or not UMPC is useful, so when I saw the first Ultra Mobile PC oriented advertisement I thought I’d better post it.

On this occasion it’s a mob called Camera Action from Melbourne that a using the UMPC fame to capture the imagination of the target market. Not only have they placed a picture of the eo and a Canon Digital Camera on the full-page ad, but they’ve also followed up with a catch cry like “The future of mobile computing lies with the TabletKiosk UMPC. The future of digital imaging lies with us.”

Let’s hope this is the start of something good.

For the record

While I was away I it seems as though another mate of mine has decided to have a dig (that’s Aussie speak for launch an attack). First it was Frank Garcia, and now Chippy!

Before you all get too carried away with my opening comment you need to know that this is all in good jest. Both Chippy and I are good mates, and in fact Frank and I are too. What occurs – often – is that we have-a-dig in order to see if the other is awake/listening/asleep or not. So on this occasion I thought it was important to fill in some blanks and go on record for Chippys sake. At this point you may want to note that my videos are shot unprepared, unedited and unintentional. They are really about a geek spontaneously having fun in the moment. LOL.

The following is an extract from Chippy’s blog and in RED text are my thoughts.

Chippy said:

  • Its significant that a tablet MVP has dropped pen input. Ive said before that I think handwriting input is going to become less important. Especially for mobile and mass market consumers. It will still be useful for a niche segment but its not important for devices that are not targeted at this segment. Oops Chippy...your first "what tha!" Unquestionably I chose the OQO for its PEN features far and beyond most other compelling reasons; it is after all the smallest Wacom Enabled UMPC on Market (which makes it the best for inking). The only other feature that comes close to the importance I hold for the pen on my Model 02 is the form-factor itself. Have a listen to this podcast I recorded with the GBM Team (May 22nd) which should show you that this is not an off the cuff remark I am making but something I feel stands true. I dont believe there is any such thing as a Tablet MVP losing their love for the pen...especially not me. I believe you are entitled to your comment (regarding the demise of the pen) and it sounds like you have a great ally in JKK too. There is a great deal of merit in Touch Technology and your argument but I believe it should never be as black or white as one or the other. The choice will empower many. If we lose one or the other then we lose so much flexibility.
  • The Samsung Q1 organizer keyboard is not cramped. Its one of the best quality mini keyboards that Ive ever used. Im using it right now and have no need to attach a full size keyboard. Have you got farmers fingers mate? Good point mate (not about the fingers). Allow me to elaborate...The Q1 Keyboard is most useful in a static position, i.e. not standing, not car, not walking. IMHO the Organiser Pack, which I love so much, is inconvenient when actually static (as I prefer a "real" keyboard then) and also inconvenient when I am mobile (as I prefer a smaller one). As I stated in my video these are benefits I did not realise I would appreciate until I got the OQO in my hands. Subsequently I have had to make myself flexible enough to accept the changes that are occurring in the Tablet space and learn to implement them into my routine without falling trap to previous addictions.
  • Do you need that Dopod any more? Youve pretty much said that the OQO does everything that the Dopod does and better. If I were you I would move down to a feature phone. Absolutely makes more sense now. In fact I am not using it as much any more at all. Im not sure what to get though?!?! Any Mobile Phone Dudes want to recommend a phone for me. I need HSDPA, touch, Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.0, and small. The Dopod 810 springs to mind but I think it’s still a bit big.
  • Pocketing an OQO Model 02 is going to be 1 - awkward 2 - going to rip your pockets. I used to carry a lot around in my suit when I worked in London but I ended up at the tailors every three months! (I think youre reading too much into this comment of mine.) Ironically pocketing the OQO is NOT something I do often. My video was designed to highlight that it CAN be done SHOULD the need arise. In fact one of my readers even pointed out that I might not be able to pull it out of my pocket when sitting! Good point. LOL. As an FYI normally I pull it out of my pocket well before my bum hits any seat. LOL.
  • Is it really your desktop PC or do you have a larger desktop that you use for video editing? It is my desktop replacement for Business functionality, i.e. everything other than ripping podcasts and editing videos. Dont forget I own over 17 Tablets (including UMPC) so Im a little spoilt. The Model 02 has however, for the record, replaced my desktop; podcasts and videos are a hobby for me and I don’t consider them as part of my day-to-day desktop requirements. For this reason I see these tasks as vertically oriented rather than directly related to my desktop activities – so I use a dedicated device for those tasks. I think we all know that editing a movie on a C7M would be futile (unless left as its only task).
  • Numeric keypad. How many numbers are you putting in per day? really needed? Oops...I thought it was my video, about me. LOL. WRT the number pad I use it a lot. My passwords for almost everything are alphanumeric so daily I would use it between 30 and 60 times a day. Not to mention when I am working with numbers on an Excel spreadsheet or putting Contract entries into Outlook.
  • Q1 organizer pack is a table-top solution I agree. Not a sofa, standing, car, bed solution. Here what you said in point number two "The Samsung Q1 organizer keyboard is not cramped." Now you come back with a contradictory comment. For the record it is cramped, in some instances, and not cramped, in others. I stand by my reply to your point number two. I think it’s about choice.
  • I agree. Windows is not optimized for touch but there is a lot of software that is. Navigation for example. Touch is important. I just dont miss Touch on a 5" device. Sorry.
  • I use the Q1b as a desktop replacement but its not quite good enough. Intel based devices make far better desktop replacements. XP on 1.2Ghz VIA is probably about the entry point so yes, I agree it can be used as a desktop and yes, you have to change your working style a little. So true.
  • What battery life do you get with your extended battery. Is it a full day like with the other two solutions or did you sacrifice some battery life? No sacrifice due to a little beauty of an accessory named the Battery Charging Adapter. All that has happened is that I carry two fully charged extended batteries instead of one 6 cell plus an 8 cell power bank.
  • We know that the keyboard on the OQO isnt much faster than on screen typing/handwriting. Would you be happy to lose 4-8mm on the depth of the device (or have a bigger battery capacity) without a keyboard and use an on screen keyboard? Personally it is much faster than the use of the software keyboard embedded in the TIP (Tablet Input Panel). Once again personally it is slower than ink-to-text using the TIP. So it is dependent on what you/I am doing. I would favour this device with a keyboard more so than without it. At least it is there on the 30% of the time I need it (% based on overall usage). Batteries would not be a reason to lose the keyboard as much as weight and thickness would. If it did not have a keyboard I dont think I would have bought it as I would rather go back to the Q1P with OP. Because my keyboard usage (as stated previously) is somewhat dynamic, i.e. sit/walk/run, then it has merit here; take it away and it might change the hole HUGOMETER balance.
  • Dont forget to highlight that the OQO Model 02 with docking station is around double the cost of a Q1b with organizer! You have to be tech-savvy and also be able to justify saving minutes per day to balance the extra cost. You just did. Well done.

MEDC Australia is approaching

MEDC (Mobile and Embedded DevCon) Australia is fast approaching and some facts are starting to emerge. Here’s what we know so far:
  • MEDC is going to be on May 16th, so keep the date free
  • it’s going to be a great event for developers and partners interested in Mobility and Embedded devices. Theyve announced new versions of Windows Mobile since the last MEDC so there will be plenty of great content, aimed at a technical audience.
  • Microsoft folks are busy getting a new website up but in the meantime users can go to http://www.medc2007.com/ to find out more about what’s on offer and to sign up to be notified when registration opens.

If you’ve ever attended an MEDC you’ll know that they are high energy and can deliver some quality deep dive sessions that you just don’t get anywhere else, and certainly not on shelves. I love the hardware (but that’s just me) and the presenters like Dr. Neil Roodyn and Nick Randolph always seem to make the event worthwhile. This year keep an eye out for my travel mate and fellow MVP James McCutcheon.

So if you’re in town and want to be part of The Solution then why not take part in this year’s MEDC Australia. You never know, you might see me on stage waving arms and chanting hallelujah! (Not that Ive been asked to speak, yet, but I might just get up anyways.)

Aussie locals will be excited to catch up with favourites like Frank Arrigo, Jeff Alexander, Uber passionate Rick Anderson and the now legendary Don Kerr!

Another Hugos Notes with Dr Neil

Yesterday Dr. Neil Roodyn and I sat down and ripped another podcast. Its almost a habit now and locked in as part of our weekly routine. If we keep getting feedback and comments the way we have been it may well become irreversible- scary!

I must admit that this topic was fun and insightful for us both. The topic was nominated by Matt Propst on this thread on my blog, and as usual involved some banter and some conflict - in the name of the greater community. What I find amusing about these podcasts is just how naked you become, even a friend of mine comments on something I let slip.

So grab some of your favourite fairy bread and listen to our latest edition of Dr. Neils Notes:

Manly Breakfast best when surrounded by Geeks!

This morning my wife and I, with Son Leon Ortega in hand, had breakfast with the Gang. There was Dr. Neil Roodyn with his partner Kris, and Adam Cogan with wife Anastasia and their two adorable daughters, Luke Burton (Apple Employee) and fianc̩e Kathy, and lastly but most uniquely was Billy Hollis (Billys Books) Рin Australia, from Tennessee, as part of the Patterns and Practices Summit held in Sydney.

It was Adam’s daughters, Eve and Ruby, which kicked up a storm with my son Leon commandeering the Manly Beach play gym with a real definiteness of purpose. It wasnt long before the girls (all our partners) joined in too. The king of the "twirly whirly" (or whatever they call it) was Billy Hollis!

Obviously, with such brain power on the beach it wasn’t long before I was preaching Tablet to Adam Cogan, we all started bragging about Google rankings and moved onto bees making honey (Adam explained, “they have two stomachs”) and the fact that Polar Bears aren’t white (Hugo pointed out, “they’re black, with translucent fur.”)

Adam Cogan, Hugo Ortega and Leon Ortega

All in all a great morning!

  • Were you at the Patterns and Practices Summit held in Sydney?
  • The cafe we had breakfast at was: Cafe Steyne!

Considering buying UMPC then watch this!

Hugo Ortega, me, Tablet Guy Downunder, has always made an effort to bring you the best Tablet related information on the planet; I scroll through all the topics relating to Tablet PC so that you dont have to. Todays blogpost is no exception.

In the world of UMPC there are few that can hold court like my mate James Kendrick. Normally we only get an audio when we tune into the "jkOn TheRun" podcast; this time however were gifted with a videocast. The show has absolutely appealed to my highly visual nature!

So what will you see? James has gone to marvelous length to actually show you the Tablet Kiosk eo UMPC available in Australia performing under normal everyday working conditions. I rate this video as a must see if youre looking at purchasing, or have purchased, a UMPC device, especially the "eo."

What I love most about this videocast is that the "eo" is in James hands long enough for us to witness some of the UMPC idiosyncrasies, therefore giving us a strong indication of how we would work through the learning-curve that is undoubtedly going to occur with UMPC.

Interesting points in the video:

  • Watch translucent keyboard in action.
  • Watch James switch between UMPC resolution i.e. from native 800x480 and all the way up to 1024x768.
  • Watch James interact with the Microsoft TouchPak and with traditional Windows XP by merely minimizing.
  • Watch James rest his palm on the screen and write, using the stylus, at the same time (wow).

Nokia X2 01 smartphone best review

Nokia telephone from the economic and technical certainly not trendy, but more in line with the amount of euros required to buy it. To type messages quickly, provides a convenient full physical keyboard, integrated camera, FM radio and is able to receive updates of the status of social networks, while not equipped with 3G connectivity.

Nokia X2-01 Main features: network, display and power
Nokia X2-01 is a quad phone that operates on GSM networks. The exchange data must, of necessity, take place on such networks and maximum downlink speeds of stands, then, on 296 kbs. To connect to Bluetooth module incorporates a 2.1 and do not miss the USB port to connect to the computer: X2-01 is a Nokia phone that can also act as a modem. They also present a 2 mm connector for the charger, the 3.5 mm AV and slots for micro SD memory card (optional) and the consequent expansion of storage capacity. The screen size is limited, having to leave room for the QWERTY keyboard: its diagonal measurement is 2.5 inches and 320 x 240 dot resolution, those of QVGA resolution. 262 000 colors are supported by this LCD. The battery power is equal to 1020 mAh, 504 hours on the phone to ensure maximum autonomy in stand-by mode and 270 minutes of talk time.

Nokia X2-01 Design
There are different colors that Nokia has chosen to X2-01: it goes from silver to dark gray, two-tone versions through a red-black, pink and blue-white-black. The phone weighs 108 grams and measuring 119 mm in length, the width is 60 mm and 14 mm thickness.

Nokia X2-01 Main functions, multimedia and messaging
The full keyboard is especially useful when, Nokia X2-01, we will use the client to facebook and twitter, chat and write text messages and e-mail. The phone integrates the radio and it works as a reader. Songs you download from the Nokia store, or uploaded directly to your phone, you can listen with headphones or standard stereo Bluetooth headset. On homesscrenn you can add shortcuts to the applications you use most often. Also a translator between the integrated applications, stopwatch, timer and Java games.

Nokia X2-01 integrated camera
Nokia X2-01 integrates a camera that has a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. A VGA resolutions so far from the best performing phones from this point of view. The maximum digital zoom is 4x, and this gives the same camera is also used to film the video. The phone allows you to select the quality level, shooting delayed to reduce the noise and apply effects in real time.

Nokia X2-01 Verdict

Nokia phone with a QWERTY keyboard and 2G connectivity, colored and equipped with a VGA resolution camera. It stands out for its low price. Even if you can download applications and fees dallOVI store, has the potential of smartphones sold at higher prices. It has clients for the major social networks and popular chat. Powered by a 1020 mAh battery, do not you download the first 270 minutes of talk time.

RIM Confident Prestige Will Again Raised by BlackBerry 10

The reason behind the delay in the launch of the BlackBerry 10 is depicted by the CEO of RIM Thorstein Heins recently. In addition to explaining the reasons why the launch of the device with the latest operating system was on his retreat, Thorstein also believes that after its launch, the BlackBerry will be stronger.

CEO of RIM as quoted via Pocket-lint, explain to the source on CIO.com that delays BlackBerry 10 is the right thing to do.

"We could just as scheduled, even if it means sacrificing the quality and stability of the platform. And we decided not to do it, because we must ensure that when providing the BlackBerry, it is the best quality," said Thorstein Heins.

Related criticism is directed at RIM which is considered to be left behind, which affects the decreasing sales of the BlackBerry, CEO of RIM argued that it also will not left behind to innovate.

"We are also not left behind in matters of innovation, to the level of understanding, especially in the U.S., that this trend has changed, and that our position and our value proposition in the U.S. market does not follow the trend has changed," he continued.

RIM also believe though it reduces the number of devices that rains out, but the quality of products along with BlackBerry OS 10, it is hoped will be able to restore the prestige of Canadian mobile phone vendor in the business of mobile devices.
